I wanted to do a professional job and ask good, thoughtful, intelligent questions. Vidal wasn't invited to the field rededication. His literary talents were prodigious, though he scandalized the elites early in his career by writing a novel openly celebrating homosexuality. The City and the Pillar was the first gay novel that I read, unaware that it had practically killed his career in the 1950s, forcing him to work under pseudonyms. The New York Times refused to review his next five books.
